Because of this inviting fragrance, Benzoin has long been used in ceremonial blends designed to calm the mind and lift the spirit. Benzoin is a component of Friar’s Balsam, which has a long history of use for respiratory problems. Use benzoin in an oil burner or as a chest rub. It is especially beneficial before bedtime as a chest rub as its relaxing properties enable you to sleep deeply too.
Origin & Production
The benzoin tree is native to Java, Sumatra, and Thailand. It typically grows to about 20 feet tall and is valued not for its leaves or flowers, but for its resin. Harvesters make careful incisions in the bark, allowing a milky sap to ooze out and harden upon exposure to air. Once solidified into resinous lumps, it is collected and later processed into essential oil.
A blend of the resin is mixed with DPG as a solvent to render it mobile.
DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL (DPG) is a colourless, nearly odourless liquid with a high boiling point and low toxicity. It is a mixture of three isomeric chemical compounds, 4-oxa-2,6-heptandiol, 2-(2-Hydroxy-propoxy)-propan-1-ol, and 2-(2-Hydroxy-1-methyl-ethoxy)-propan-1-ol.
