Salvia apiana (white sage, bee sage, or sacred sage) is an evergreen perennial shrub native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, found mainly on the coast of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. Salvia Apiana is widely used by Pacific Coast Native American groups. The Cahuilla women drink tea from the roots for healing after childbirth. The leaves are also burned by many for smoke-based purification rituals.
A study performed at the University of Arizona in 1991 demonstrated that Salvia Apiana has potential anti-bacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Candida brassicae.
Safety advice when using smudges:
Provide a fireproof bowl or abalone shell. Light the end of the bundle and fan it for a while so that the flame goes out and the bundle continues to smoulder.
If the smudge is tightly bundled, blow extra to keep the herbs smouldering properly. With this smouldering bundle, perform the smudge ceremony. Make sure the fireproof bowl is kept under the smudge bundle at all times.
After the end of the session or ceremony, you can extinguish the bundle again in a bowl of sand (check carefully that it is actually out) and keep the bundle for another use.
The smudge stick is c. 10 cm long and weighs 30-35 grams.
