About smudging

Used in traditional Native American rituals and increasingly popular with Western therapists and body workers, these herbs have beneficial properties. Connect with ancient practices and cleanse people, places, and objects through the sacred act of smudging.

To apply the protective cleansing power of smudging, a bundle of leaves or resin is heated to produce smoke that is brushed over the person or object, often with a feather fan. Some plants are known to have specific healing properties while others have more generic powers.

Safety advice when using smudges:
Provide a fireproof bowl or abalone shell. Light the end of the bundle and fan it for a while so that the flame goes out and the bundle continues to smoulder.

If the smudge is tightly bundled, blow extra to keep the herbs smouldering properly. With this smouldering bundle, perform the smudge ceremony. Make sure the fireproof bowl is kept under the smudge bundle at all times.

After the end of the session or ceremony, you can extinguish the bundle again in a bowl of sand (check carefully that it is actually out) and keep the bundle for another use.

The smudge stick is c. 10 cm long and weighs 30-35 grams.
