Derived from the Greek word thymos, meaning 'perfume', thyme has a rich history in herbal medicine. From the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to the Romans, it has been used for various purposes, including as incense in temples and in embalming. Ancient Greeks believed thyme and its extracts could give them courage and restore vigour and mental alertness. They used sprigs of thyme in their baths and burned it as incense in their temples. During the Middle Ages, it was even given to jousting knights for courage and later carried into courtrooms to ward off diseases and freshen the air.
