Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip Seed Oil is obtained from the wild rose or dog rose plant (Rosa Canina) plant that is cultivated widely around the world, the plant is commonly seen in hedgerows. The fruit of the plant are known as rosehips and are recognised for their very high vitamin-c content. Various methods are used to extract the oil from the seeds. Precious organic rosehip seed oil is produced only by cold pressing of the seeds giving a yield of about 5% oil. Other extraction methods include chemical extraction using solvents and high heat, this gives a much higher oil yield (approximately 20%), but destroys most of the beneficial properties of the oil. Organic unrefined rosehip seed oil is a rich red colour, a golden coloured organic rosehip seed oil is also produced, but this has significantly lower levels of beneficial carotenoids (that give the oil its characteristic red colour), and other antioxidants.

Contrary to popular belief (and a lot of misleading marketing) rosehip seed oil does not contain high levels of vitamin-C, or any level of vitamin-C for that matter. The very high levels of vitamin-C in rosehips are found in the skin of the fruit – the seeds do not contain any vitamin-C. Along with B-vitamins, vitamin C is water-soluble – it can not occur in the oil of rosehip seeds. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble, and it is here that rosehip seed oil is truly exceptional. It is the only vegetable oil that contains natural tretinoin, the acid form of vitamin A, which helps to delay the effects of skin ageing, promoting collagen and elastin levels and replenishing and rebuilding skin tissue. In addition the oil contains very high levels of tocopherols, particularly alpha-tocopherol, which is the most biologically active form of vitamin-E. Rosehip seed oil also has a very high level of linoleic and linolenic acids, which gives it powerful properties in repairing the skin barrier function. In addition the oil is one of the best sources of omega 3 and omega 6.

Scientific research has shown rosehip seed oil to be beneficial for a broad range of skin conditions. These include:

  • Dermatitis
  • Burns
  • Reducing skin pigmentation and discolouration
  • Stretch marks
  • Scars
  • Acne lesions
  • Eczema
  • Wrinkels and premature aging
  • Psoriasis

Rosehip seed oil is one of the few oils that has a very fast absorption rate into the skin, it is considered a ‘drying’ oil that does not leave an oily residue.
